National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary and community service program in India that aims to instill the spirit of social welfare and community service among the youth. It was launched in 1969 to celebrate the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. NSS is part of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Government of India.
NSS is a voluntary program, and students from universities and colleges can join as volunteers. It is open to students between the ages of 18 and 25.
Motto: The NSS motto is "Not Me But You," which reflects the essence of selfless service and the importance of community welfare over individual interests.
Objectives:
To develop a sense of social responsibility among students.
To understand and appreciate the community's needs and problems.
To engage in activities that contribute to the improvement of the community and society at large.
To foster a sense of brotherhood and empathy among volunteers.
Activities: NSS volunteers engage in various community service activities such as:
Cleanliness drives
Health and hygiene campaigns
Blood donation camps
Environmental conservation projects
Educational and awareness programs
Skill development initiatives
Disaster management and relief work
Special Camps: NSS conducts special camps, usually of seven days' duration, in rural or economically backward areas. These camps provide a platform for volunteers to work closely with the community and understand their needs.
